Boston Unlocked

A community-driven Shadowrun Chronicles: Boston Lockdown Server Reimplementation

BostonUnlocked

BostonUnlocked is a fully community-driven Shadowrun Chronicles: Boston Lockdown Server Reimplementation. It aims to provide an experience which as close as possible to the original (aka vanilla) final version of Shadowrun Chronicles: Boston Lockdown game server when it was last officially online (client version 23.3.28073.265425).

This free server has been reverse engineered from the official game client as well as the original server binaries (the latter with the permission and collaboration of our friends at the Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment (MADE)). A clean-room reverse engineering approach was used. The reimplemented server contains no proprietary code or assets and requires official game client files to work.

The BostonUnlockedServer GitHub repository contains tooling and a C# local service that lets the Shadowrun Chronicles: Boston Lockdown client talk to the reimplemented server (BostonUnlocked).

In short, you can run your own server to play the game and optionally set it up to invite friends to play with you.

2026-04-21 Loot Drop Tables Reference, Respec, Server Status Page Improvements

Hoi Chummers, at the 2 month anniversary of BostonUnlocked, progress continues!

Loot Drop Tables Reference

Previously, our Game Reference section specified drop tables as unlisted as they vary per player profile. Characteristically undeterred by the challenge, ShadowAid found a solution: list the drop tables containing the items directly! The Loot Drop Tables Reference is now live on the documentation site.

Respec

A long-requested feature is now available: you can respec your character via the /resetskills Global Chat Command. This command is no longer restricted to Admin Global Chat Commands). Respeccing undoes skill selections and refunds karma without losing story progression, allowing you to modify your character's build. Every character gets 1 free respec but the next respec is only available after 28 days on the community server (self-hosting grants admins unlimited respecs).

There were indications in the code that the developers intended to add a respec feature and several BostonUnlocked players requested it as well. This deviation from full vanilla behaviour is therefore in keeping with what we can make out of the original direction of the game along with discussions with the community so far. This is an experimental feature so let us know what you think about it on our Discord server! Whether we keep this feature or remove it from general availability is entirely up to you!

Server Status Page Improvements

Since our last announcement, the server status page has had several improvements.

An initial update showed party grouping (the party leader is marked with a star):

The latest version also includes a mission status indicator to help you find players to group with. Players surrounded by a square under a mission are in a party, the party leader is marked with a star: Server Status Page current version with mission status indicator

To view it, simply open the community server's IP in a browser (how to find the IP is detailed in the Quick Start Guide).

Miscellaneous Updates

Other updates include:

  1. Duplicate copies of characters visible in hubs have been fixed.
  2. Various security updates were made.
  3. The latest server status page view was updated in the Features and Limitations page.

Have fun and yes, there is more in the pipeline!
